Rubirizi District Boss Steps Down for NRM Flagbearer
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has secured a key reconciliation in Rubirizi District after incumbent LC5 Chairperson Sylvester Agubashongorera agreed to withdraw his independent nomination and back the official NRM flagbearer, in a move party leaders say will strengthen cohesion ahead of the 2026 elections.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has reaffirmed the NRM’s commitment to unity and inclusivity, urging members who contested as independents to return to the party fold.

Tayebwa made the call during a visit to Rubirizi District, where he met party structures and worked with Rtd. Lt. Moses Mushabe, Chairperson of the NRM Veterans League, to resolve internal misunderstandings.

“Through honest dialogue, we want them to know that the party holds them in high regard and that unity is our greatest strength,” he said.

Tayebwa also raised concerns about Rubirizi’s historically low voter turnout, recalling that the district recorded one of the lowest participation rates in 2021.

“This time, we are determined to further consolidate support while significantly increasing voter turnout,” he said, expressing confidence in the party’s preparations for the next electoral cycle.

The visit was aimed at addressing internal conflicts and reinforcing party structures. Tayebwa assured NRM independents that the party remains open and welcoming to those willing to rejoin and work towards a united front.
